Eco-Change

Chapters are encouraged to make one lifestyle change in each of their houses to get them on track for living in the most environmentally efficient quarters and leading the most environmentally efficient lifestyles they possibly can.

The lifestyle changes are not limited to the following, and creativity in the name of eco-friendliness will be highly recognized. Chapter delegates should select 1 change to implement within their chapter each year.

  • Implementing a new recycling plan to collect all the aluminum cans/water bottles used in the kitchens
  • Recycling all paper materials given out over the course of the year or starting an electronic correspondence program so that minimal paper is ever used
  • Printing all function t-shirts on hemp, recycled cotton, or organic cotton tees
  • Ordering bags made of the above environmentally friendly materials for the new members each year
  • Using only compact fluorescent light bulbs – (swirly bulbs). You’ll save $30 in energy costs over the life of the bulb
  • Using only environmentally safe cleaning solvents within in maid service – Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day Products include bio-degradable ingredients and come in recyclable containers
  • Planting trees (for CO2 absorption) and re-landscaping chapter houses using native (i.e. drought tolerant) plants
  • Offering organically grown produce at meal times – we could safe the world 10 million pounds of pesticides that would NOT be used annually if every single person ate organic
  • Switching to recycled paper products at mealtimes to eliminate Styrofoam
  • Encouraging people to bring their own Tupperware when they sign-up for late plates
  • Limiting showers to 5-7 minutes to conserve water
  • Printing on recycled paper/ buying recycled paper napkins – you save up to 1 million trees a year by doing this
  • Buying bulk products with minimal packaging (e.g. washing detergent in a smaller bottle with higher concentrations to be used in the laundry room)
  • Offering only fair-trade products (coffees) during mealtimes – these are farmed organically
  • Replacing furnishings when needed with hemp – can start with area rugs and curtains
  • Including spider plants in your interior décor – these plants are proven to combat indoor pollution. They absorb toxic chemicals released by cleaning products, furnishing and fabrics
  • Unplugging electronics and appliances – this can cut your energy bill by 26% annually
  • Installing dual-flush toilets – they can cut your water consumption in half and offer a full-flush and ½ flush option
